Horticulture is plant science that includes the study of plant growth and plant interactions with the environment soil, air, water to improve human life through the cultivation of crops and the maintenance of a sustainable environment.

Horticulture is unique as a scientific field of study in that it often utilizes artistic expression to aid the design of human landscapes and to restore natural environments. At its core it is an environmental science that recognizes that humans are dependent on their environment for sustenance and well-being that has developed as a field of study that recognizes humans are philosophically and artistically linked to nature through millions of years of human evolution.

Our department is committed to engaging students in service and learning projects in the local community. Students learn to design, build, and manage beautiful and functional landscapes using science-based practices that improve the living environment and contribute to environmental sustainability. The graduation requirements in effect at the time of graduation apply.

When choosing the degree requirements information, always choose the year of your expected date of graduation. The number of credit hours required for degree completion varies among curricula.

Students must satisfactorily complete all requirements and university obligations for degree completion. The university reserves the right to modify requirements in a degree program. However, the university will not alter degree requirements less than two years from the expected graduation year unless there is a transition plan for students already in the degree program.

Students can specialize in producing floriculture and nursery plants, growing sustainable fruits and vegetables, landscape design and management, and other areas of plant science. By the end of the academic year in which the student has attempted 72 hours including transfer, advanced placement, advanced standing and credit by exam , "satisfactory progress" toward the B.

Fundamentals of urban horticulture and urban ecosystems. Philosophy of sustainability, urban forestry, urban wildlife, sustainable and community-supported agriculture, and innovations merging plant and ecosystem functions with building and site engineering. Horticultural Technology Management

Horticulture is the science and art of growing plants for food, personal enjoyment, and environmental enhancement. Horticulture includes the production, marketing, and utilization of fruit and vegetable products that improve health and well-being, shade trees that reduce the urban heat island effect, bedding plants that increase business profits, and interior plants that reduce stress and enhance productivity. All students must meet requirements as outlined in the catalog in order to graduate. A variety of state, federal, and university-sponsored programs are available to help students with educational costs. The Horticulture Club is one of the largest and most successful student groups at Washington State University. Members participate in scholarship fund-raising projects such as plant sales and cider pressing; host guest scientists and industry representatives; and team up with other student clubs to sponsor social events such as the annual winter holiday party, spring picnic, and the fall barbecue for new students.

Environmental Horticulture

This concentration provides students with a strong foundation in plant sciences along with specialized knowledge in horticultural fruit and vegetable crop systems at urban, local, and commercial scales. Graduates from this program are prepared for careers as crop consultants, crop protection and production specialists; entrepreneurs in urban and local food systems; greenhouse or farm managers; and as community gardening and horticultural educators. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (B.S.A.G.) Major in Agriculture (Horticulture Concentration)

A horticulturist sometimes called a horticulturalist is a scientist who has knowledge of plants and soil and studies and cultivates plants. As a horticulturist, you might work in landscaping or focus on the management of crops. You might research soil and plants and then use your knowledge to enhance crop yields. Other career possibilities include advising farmers or agriculture companies, teaching others interested in horticulture, working as an environmental advocate, or consulting with private or government agencies regarding agriculture and the environment. You will typically need a bachelor's degree to obtain an entry-level job as a horticulturist, according to Environmental Science , although a two-year degree may qualify you to work in a plant nursery. Most aspiring horticulturists seek bachelor's degrees in majors like horticulture or botany. In most cases, these degree programs last for about four years and include laboratory work in addition to lectures. Often, these programs allow you to choose a specialty after your first couple of years of study.

Careers range from production management to processing and marketing, retail and wholesale management, greenhouse and nursery production, floriculture, landscaping, turf management, research and development, various service activities and positions with local, state and federal agencies.
